4. National Historical Museum

National Historical Museum: A wonderful museum that everyone should visit

The National Historical Museum was founded in 1882 by the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece (IEEE).

The museum is related to the history of modern Hellenism, from the Fall of Constantinople to the Second World War. Through this it promotes the political, social and intellectual evolution of Hellenism from the period of Ottoman domination to the present era.

The National Historical Museum also functions as a research center of modern Greek history. Since 1960 the Museum has been permanently housed in the Old Parliament House on Stadiou Street, in the city center of Athens.

The Benaki Museum: The most famous museum in Athens

The Benaki Museum is one of the most famous museums in Athens. It was founded in 1929 by Antonis Benakis in memory of his father, Emmanuel Benakis.

The main museum is housed in the neoclassical building of the Benaki family, built in 1867-1868 on Vasilissis Sofias boulevard, opposite the National Garden.

The museum hosts exhibits of all time of Greek history and art from prehistoric times to modern times. You will also admire exhibits of ancient Byzantine, post-Byzantine, Islamic and traditional art. Museum collections include also works of Asian, Chinese and Coptic art.
