The Historical Museum of Crete was founded in 1953, run by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies.

Lychnostatis Museum

Lychnostatis Museum: An ideal place to explore the traditional way of Cretan life

The Museum of Traditional Life and Folk Culture of Crete “Lychnostatis” was built by Giorgos Markakis in the period 1986-1992. You can get there by driving or taking a bus from Heraklion east to Chersonissos, about 10 km.

The surprising thing is that only raw materials were used in the construction and the use of mechanical means was avoided.

The museum is related to the traditional architecture of Crete, the traditional occupations and professions, contemporary Cretan art and pre-industrial technology.
