Potamos is an important commercial hub that retains its traditional style

A scenic route in the midst of pine trees leads to the largest village in Kythera, Potamos, to the island’s centre north. Although it is one of the most important commercial centres of Kythera, it retains its traditional style.

It is a pretty village immersed in greenery with significant architectural interest because of its beautiful old mansions, the Venetian garrison headquarters, as well as the neo-classical building that housed the nursery home. In older times it was known as “the Lady’s village”, because of the church of Panagia Ilariotissa located here.

Every Sunday there is a flea market at the central square of Potamos. In the old days, the purpose of this flea market was not only the sale of local products but also served as a meeting point for the merchants of the island who found the opportunity to carry out their financial transactions and keep up with the local gossip!
