Don’t miss Ammoudi bay, the hidden gem lying underneath Oia

Oia, the village sitting on the northernmost tip of Santorini, is truly mesmerizing, probably the most photographed place ever and rightly so. The more sophisticated travellers tend to pick this place, which makes more of an effort to keep its unspoilt character.

Everywhere you look is just beyond stunning and even though it usually is insanely busy, there’s room for everyone because of all the hidden winding streets. For beautiful views of the caldera, descend the 300 steps from Oia to the tiny port of Ammoudi Bay.

(Travelers say the hike can be taxing but it’s well worth it.) Surrounded by steep cliffs, this little fishing area features several quaint tavernas serving up the catch of the day. This is also a nice spot to enjoy the sun and some swimming, though the beach is rocky so you should bring appropriate footwear.

The bay is tucked away underneath Oia, away from the hustle and bustle, with boats that just happily bop along with the waves. In the 1970’s, the Greek National Tourism Organization decided to restore several buildings in Oia and 16 buildings in Ammoudi which were severely damaged from the 1956 earthquake. Ammoudi can be reached coming down the 214 steps starting from Oia’s castle or from the coastal road that connects Ammoudi to the rest of the island.
