A story that few people know…

The Shipwreck in Zakynthos may be the most famous in Greece but it is not the only one. There are other smaller or larger ones, each with its own history. One of them is the Shipwreck Dimitrios in Gythio. An impressive shipwreck that rests on land and leaves the visitors speechless. The images from above are extremely impressive.

The Shipwreck Dimitrios and its history

The shipwreck Dimitrios may not be very well known but it has its own interesting history. And it’s definitely very imposing. The ship has been on Selinitsa beach since December 23, 1981. And a number of myths may have been heard, but the true story is one. The reality is that the 67-meter-long boat ended up turning into a ghost ship after being abandoned by its owners.

The testimonies recorded indicate the following: The truck – ship “Dimitrios” belonged to the Mollaris brothers by 76.75% and the Matsinos brothers by 23.25%. However, they abandoned it due to financial problems and mechanical failures. And because of these conditions forced it to come to a standstill.

At some point, in December 1980, the ship sailed to Gythio on an emergency due to the captain’s illness. Captain’s health conditions were serious and he needed to go to a hospital. In fact, until June 1981 the ship remained in the same position. Its owners, however, were notified by the port authority that the ship had become dangerous. It had leaned to the right from the inflow of water into its hulls. Despite the fact that there were tries to be anchoring somewhere normally, no one was involved…

The ship… moved away from the weather

Eventually and while there was no response from the owners to move, the ship started… to move due to the weather. It got carried away and ended up on Selinitsa beach, northeast of Gythio.

There you can see it today and be photographed close to it…
