Get a glimpse of the traditional Cretan everyday life at the Chania Folklore Museum
Through the themes of the Chania Folklore Museum unfold the life and daily activities of the Cretan people in the countryside until the first half of the 20th century.
Stay in the center of Chania Town
This is a private museum housed in a hall at the Public Library, the entrance to which is located in the yard of the Catholic Church of Chania. There, you will have the opportunity to see the basic areas of a traditional Cretan house as it was formed during the first half of the 20th century.
Of particular interest are the textiles and embroideries in the museum which are creations of its founders, Aspasia Bikaki and Irini Koumandraki, and their students. These are replicas of rare embroidery that they managed to gather from all over Crete. Equally important are the embroidery tables depicting scenes from local customs. In the Museum laboratory it is possible to make copies of old needlework.
